DPH Partnering with State Parks and YMCA to Remind Delawareans to ?Protect Your Skin?

The days are heating up as we approach the official start of summer. While most people are focused on getting outdoors to be more active, enjoy sports like baseball and fishing, and appreciate the warmth, the Division of Public Health (DPH) is reminding everyone to be mindful of the sun's harmful rays. Overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UVA and UVB) rays can lead to skin cancer. Delaware ranks third nationally for skin cancer diagnosis. Building on ongoing awareness efforts, the 2017 Division of Public Health's #ProtectYourSkinDE skin cancer prevention campaign is under way to educate Delawareans, especially children, teens and young adults about skin cancer prevention.

DNREC Secretary?s Order approves issuance of permits for construction and operation of City of Rehoboth Beach ocean outfall

DHSS Relaunches ?Help Is Here? Website with Accompanying Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Support Campaign

The Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) today launched an updated and significantly improved version of Delaware's centralized online resource for addiction prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery information, HelpIsHereDE.com. The website is designed to assist people struggling with addiction, their families, the community, and medical providers. The new version of "Help is Here" is easier to navigate, can be translated into four languages (Spanish, Haitian Creole, French, and Chinese), is more mobile-device friendly, and offers updated information for the community and medical providers. Its expanded video section features new and highly personal testimonials from individuals in long-term recovery, parents who have lost adult children to overdoses, a treatment provider, and a police officer.

USDA seeks feedback from Delaware farmers on 2017 crop production and supply levels

The Delaware Department of Agriculture is urging farmers to participate in the two major mid-year surveys, the June Agricultural Survey and the June Area Survey, conducted by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). NASS will survey nearly 400 farmers across Delaware to determine crop production and supply levels in 2017. "As an $8 billion industry, agriculture plays a major role in Delaware's economy," said Secretary of Agriculture Michael Scuse. "The information that our farmers provide is critical to helping everyone – from fellow farmers to lawmakers to extension professionals – make decisions that will impact our industry. It is critical that NASS has the most accurate data, so I urge Delaware farmers to participate in the June Surveys."

Care is urged after red imported fire ants found in palm tree shipment

Red imported fire ants were detected during a routine check at a Sussex County business by the Delaware Department of Agriculture's Plant Industries nursery inspection team. A Hold and Control Order was promptly issued, and a treatment program to eliminate the fire ants is underway. "Buyers of tropical nursery stock - such as palm trees - should carefully inspect their plants for small, aggressive red stinging ants," said Stephen Hauss, Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey Coordinator for the Department of Agriculture. "We need these to be reported quickly and promptly to keep them from spreading or staying in Delaware over the winter."

Collaboration leads to largest round of Delaware farmland preservation in several years

"I am proud to announce the largest round of Delaware farmland permanently preserved through the Delaware Agricultural Lands Preservation Program in the last several years. This is a result of federal funding from the Natural Resources Conservation Service and funding from both New Castle County and Kent County," said Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Michael Scuse. More than 124,000 acres of Delaware farmland are now permanently preserved for future generations, with 3,039 acres of easements selected into the state's preservation program.

The Delaware Forest Service's urban and community program has awarded $58,409 in grants to 22 municipalities, HOA's, and nonprofits to fund planting and management projects to improve tree canopy on public lands and open space in the First State. Over the past 10 years, the program has funded more than $1 million in community-based tree projects in Delaware. Funded by the U.S. Forest Service, Delaware's Urban and Community Grant Program is open to all municipalities, community associations, and certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations within the State of Delaware. Funds can only be utilized on public property owned by the municipality, HOA, or nonprofit organization. Grants can range from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $5,000 in one of two project categories: tree planting or tree management. All applications require a 50-50 cost-share match in either cash or in-kind services within program guidelines.

DNREC seeks volunteers to help nesting diamondback terrapins along Port Mahon Road near Little Creek

DNREC's Division of Fish & Wildlife is seeking volunteers to ensure terrapins are successful in their journey toward reproduction at one of many places they come ashore to nest: along the Delaware Bayshore's Port Mahon Road near Little Creek. Fish & Wildlife staff will offer volunteer training beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 18 on Port Mahon Road.

Fight the Bite: Stop Tick and Mosquito-Borne Diseases

One of the best things about summer weather is more time outside. The Division of Public Health (DPH) urges people to get active and enjoy the outdoors in support of a healthy lifestyle. The Division also reminds Delawareans to protect themselves from tick and mosquito bites before heading outside. Tick and mosquito bites can cause serious illnesses, and a few small steps, such as using insect repellent, can make a big difference. In Delaware, the most common tick-borne disease is Lyme disease, which is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected deer ticks. Preliminary data for 2016 indicates there were 506 Lyme disease cases in Delaware.

DPH Announces Potential Young Child Death From Flu

Even as flu season in Delaware is winding down, the Division of Public Health (DPH) is announcing a potential flu-related death to a child under the age of 2. If confirmed, that would bring the total number of flu-related fatalities for the 2016-2017 flu season to 15. The child passed away near the end of April. To protect the privacy of the child and the family no further information about the child will be released.

Office of Animal Welfare Seeks Public?s Assistance in Case Involving Death of a Dog

Delaware Animal Services (DAS), the Enforcement Division of the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) Office of Animal Welfare, is seeking assistance from the community to solve a suspected animal cruelty case in Smyrna. Officers are conducting an investigation after a dog was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds in the 300 block of Eagle Way in Smyrna. Officers believe the dog went missing from the owner's property on Saturday evening. The dog was then found dead in its owner's yard in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 2, 2017. The dog was an adult female black pitbull mix breed dog.
