Police partnership key to reopening historic pavilion at Redden State Forest

A partnership with the Delaware State Police and the Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police is helping the Delaware Forest Service reopen its historic picnic pavilion at Redden State Forest that was closed in early 2017 due to persistent illegal activity. The parking lot and rest area – popular with hikers and horseback riders – now features bright lighting, 24-hour video surveillance, and regular patrols by both marked and undercover law enforcement personnel. Woodbridge FFA takes first in forestry career development event

Woodbridge High School's FFA took the top spot at the 2018 Forestry Career Development Event (CDE) held in Camden, Delaware this week.  Woodbridge was followed by Middletown, Smyrna, and Sussex Central. Woodbridge will now go on to represent Delaware at the 91st Annual FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis from October 24 to 27, 2018. For the first time, the 2018 challenge included a total of eight middle and high school teams competing in separate events at the same location. Smyrna Middle School's FFA took first place in their event, beating out teams from Walters Middle School (Appoquinimink), Meredith Middle School (Appoquinimink) and Millsboro Middle School.

DNREC announces members of Coastal Zone Conversion Permit Regulatory Advisory Committee and sets first committee meeting for Thursday, June 14 in Delaware City

After extensive stakeholder input and a public nomination process, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Shawn M. Garvin announced members of the Coastal Zone Conversion Permit Regulatory Advisory Committee and the committee's chair. The Regulatory Advisory Committee (RAC) will provide guidance and feedback to DNREC on development of Coastal Zone regulations that are required to be in place for issuance of conversion permits by Oct. 1, 2019.

DNREC and Mountaire Farms of Delaware, Inc. enter into consent decree addressing violations at Mountaire?s Millsboro poultry processing facility

DOVER – The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control today filed a complaint in state Superior Court against Mountaire Farms of Delaware, Inc. that requests civil penalties for Mountaire's violations of its spray and land application permits at its Millsboro facility. The complaint, which includes reimbursed costs for DNREC, calls for Mountaire to make short-term corrective measures, long-term system upgrades at the plant, along with environmental mitigation, and for Mountaire to provide an alternative water supply to nearby residents. The complaint also requests that the Superior Court approve a consent decree that redresses those permit violations through monetary penalties and mitigation measures that abate the total nitrogen amount sprayed above permit limits by Mountaire's Millsboro facility. DNREC has also filed a complaint in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware, raising claims that Mountaire has violated the Clean Water Act and the Resource Conversation and Recovery Act.

Holiday weekend anti-crime operation in Kent County by Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police on DNREC-managed properties results in 68 citations

In response to complaints of damaged state property, illegal drug use, littering, and trespassing, DNREC Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police officers over the Memorial Day weekend issued a total of 68 citations as part of an evening crime prevention operation throughout Kent County.

DPH Issues Reminder of Open Testing Dates for TB; Announces Call Center to Close Friday, June 1, 2018

The Division of Public Health is continuing its efforts to encourage former residents and employees of the ManorCare Health Services Foulk Road facility in Wilmington, between January and September 2017, to be tested for tuberculosis (TB). DPH opened a call center on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, to follow up with individuals who had been sent a letter and answer any questions, as well as to field questions from the public. As the number of incoming calls has decreased significantly since the opening, DPH is announcing that the call center will cease operations at 4:00 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2018.

DNREC Division of Parks & Recreation installs refurbished historic bridge on Yorklyn trail

DNREC's Division of Parks & Recreation installed a pedestrian bridge on a trail near Auburn Heights in Yorklyn by reusing a restored historic bridge today. The replacement bridge, The McIntyre Bowstring Bridge, was built in 1883 and set into place originally in Iowa.
