DNREC, federal, local and conservation partners gather to celebrate completion of Mispillion Harbor restoration

MISPILLION HARBOR – Against a backdrop of migrating shorebirds and spawning horseshoe crabs on the beach at Mispillion Harbor, DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin was joined by U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons, and Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester to celebrate the completion of the Mispillion Harbor restoration. The three-year project restored the area in the wake of damage inflicted by a series of coastal storms including 2012's Hurricane Sandy, and built resiliency against future storms impacting this vitally important habitat. Also joining the Secretary and the Congressional Delegation were U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Northeast Regional Director Wendi Weber, and National Fish & Wildlife Foundation Vice President of Conservation Programs Eric Schwaab.

DPH Announces TB Response at Wilmington Long-Term Care Facility

The Division of Public Health (DPH) announced today that over 600 individuals may have been exposed to someone with active tuberculosis (TB) at the ManorCare Health Services Foulk Road facility during a nine-month period in 2017. Consistent with routine Division TB protocols, the agency is sending out letters to former residents and staff of the facility who may have been exposed to the infected individual between January and September 2017. DPH is also following up with phone calls to provide information on free testing and treatment at one of its three clinics in Newark, Dover, and Georgetown.

USDA seeks feedback from Delaware farmers on 2018 crop production and supply levels

During the next several weeks, U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will conduct two major mid-year surveys, the June Agricultural Survey and the June Area Survey. DNREC announces that federal flood insurance is now available in Kent County Town of Magnolia

The Town of Magnolia has become the 50th Delaware community to participate in the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), DNREC's Division of Watershed Stewardship announced today – with flood insurance now available to all property owners in the town.

Governor Carney celebrates Arbor Day at St. Jones Reserve in Dover

Governor John C. Carney, Jr. presided over the Delaware Forest Service's 2018 Arbor Day Celebration at DNERR St. Jones Reserve in Dover on Friday, May 4. Joined by Rep. Harvey Kenton, Rep. David Wilson, Agriculture Secretary Michael T. Scuse, and DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin, Governor Carney honored the winners of the Delaware Forest Service's Arbor Day School Poster Contest, including Statewide Winner Amelia Meyer of Southern Delaware School of the Arts in Selbyville. The 2018 poster contest theme was "Trees are Terrific... and Perfect for Pollinators!" The Governor also recognized representatives from some of Delaware's 17 Tree City USA communities, including Dover Air Force Base and Arden. The event culminated with the planting of two new hawthorn trees, part of a new "science garden" at the reserve, in keeping the 2018 poster contest theme and its focus on pollinators.

DNREC?s Division of Fish & Wildlife announces acreage availability for shellfish aquaculture

DOVER – DNREC's Division of Fish & Wildlife announced today that acreage will be made available for Inland Bays' shellfish aquaculture lease starting later this month. Some acreage previously classified as "Pending" on the interactive Shellfish Aquaculture Development Area map will be updated starting May 10 to "Available." This change comes after DNREC did not receive complete applications for these acres by a one-year deadline set by the Department that expired May 2.

DPH Launches Lyme Disease Awareness Campaign

While many Delawareans couldn't be happier to see spring's arrival and winter's departure, the Division of Public Health (DPH) is warning residents that with warm weather comes ticks, fleas, mosquitoes and increased chances of vector-borne diseases. Whether staying home or traveling in the coming months, DPH wants to remind Delawareans of the risk of these diseases, which include Lyme disease, Zika, and West Nile Virus, and to share prevention tips.

DNREC seeking volunteers to help monitor state?s bat population; Division of Fish & Wildlife offers training in Smyrna Thursday, May 3 for annual Bat Count

DOVER – DNREC's Division of Fish & Wildlife is seeking volunteers to help locate bat roosts and to count bats in Delaware as the bats exit their day-time resting areas. Training for "bat spotting" will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 3 at DNREC's Aquatic Resources Education Center (AREC) located at 2520 Lighthouse Road, Smyrna, DE 19977. Both new and experienced volunteers are welcome.
