The Delaware Department of Education has awarded five new grants for afterschool and summer programs under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. The 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) program grants are designed to provide students with enrichment activities to improve the academic success of students from Title I schools. Schools are designated as Title I based on high percentage of students who come from low-income families. The money comes from federal funds.

Selbyville student wins Arbor Day Poster Contest

Amelia Meyer, a fifth-grader at the Southern Delaware School of the Arts in Selbyville, is the overall winner of the Delaware Forest Service's 2018 Arbor Day School Poster Contest, beating out entries from more than 3,200 students in 43 classes from virtually every school district. This year's theme - "Trees Are Terrific…and Perfect for Pollinators!" - was chosen to highlight the important role of trees in the health of pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The annual contest is open to grades K to 5 in all Delaware private, public, charter, and home schools. Winners were selected from each county in the following grades: K, 1-2, 3-4, and 5. Posters were evaluated on originality, use of theme, neatness, and artistic expression.

DPH Advises Delaware Residents of Multistate E. Coli Outbreak Involving Chopped Romaine Lettuce

The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) is advising Delawareans of a multistate outbreak of E. coli infections linked to chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona, growing region. The lettuce could be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 and could make people sick. To date, there have been no confirmed cases reported in Delaware, but DPH urges consumers to take precautions to prevent illness.

DPH Advises Parents, Teachers of New E-Cigarette Trend Among Teens: JUULing

The Division of Public Health (DPH) is advising parents and teachers to be aware of a recent trend among youth known as "JUULing." JUUL is a brand of e-cigarette that looks similar to a flash drive and can be charged in the USB port of a computer. JUULs can be appealing to youth for a variety of reasons. Pods come in a variety of fruit and candy flavors, the devices can be difficult to distinguish from a real flash drive, and the vapor dissipates quickly instead of hanging in the air like a smoke trail. This has caused concern among school administrators across the country as youth have taken to "JUULing" on school property, even in class.

Delaware's spring turkey hunting season opens Saturday, April 14, and runs through Saturday, May 12, DNREC's Division of Fish & Wildlife announced today, with hunters aiming to capitalize on the month-long season by bagging a gobbler afield from among the state's thriving wild turkey population.

DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife sets Delaware Waterfowl, Trout Stamp contest judging for April 12

DNREC's Division of Fish & Wildlife invites wildlife art enthusiasts, stamp and print collectors, waterfowl hunters, anglers, birdwatchers, wetland conservationists, and working retriever fans to gather at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 12 for the judging of Delaware's annual Waterfowl Stamp and Trout Stamp contests, which will be held at the Dover Public Library, 35 Loockerman Plaza, Dover, DE 19901.
