2018 Arbor Day School Poster Contest for grades K to 5

The Delaware Forest Service is now accepting entries for its annual Arbor Day Poster Contest for grades K to 5—open to all public, private, and home school students. For the first time, this year's theme is "Trees are Terrific…and Perfect for Pollinators!" The contest can teach students about the important role of trees in the well-being of both people and pollinators, such as bees. In Delaware, Arbor Day is designated as the last Friday in April (April 27, 2018). Arbor Day was started in Nebraska in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton as an occasion to both celebrate and encourage the planting of trees. In addition to a chance to win prizes, all students that participate will receive free loblolly pine seedlings, delivered during the last week of April. Teachers must register for the contest by March 15 to reserve free seedlings, and all posters are due March 29, 2018.

DPH Announces Third Flu Death of the 2017-2018 Season; First Sussex County Resident Death

A third person has died as a result of complications due to the flu since the start of the 2017-2018 flu season in October. The Division of Public Health (DPH) announced that a 76-year-old Sussex County man passed away over the weekend in a New Castle County hospital. The man who had several underlying health conditions, is the first flu-related death from Sussex County this season.

DOVER – The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and the Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA) have proposed new regulations expanding the scope of legal possession of firearms within Delaware's state parks, state wildlife areas and state forests. Both agencies submitted the proposed regulations for publication in the Feb. 1 Monthly Register in response to a Dec. 7, 2017 Delaware Supreme Court decision that overturned a Superior Court ruling and expanded the scope of visitors' ability to possess firearms in Delaware's state parks under DNREC's authority and state forests which are under the DDA's jurisdiction.

USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service released the final crop production numbers for 2017. Overall, Delaware farmers had a good year with some of the crops breaking records. According to Secretary of Agriculture Michael T. Delaware?s Toxics Release Inventory Report for 2016 compiled by DNREC shows overall decrease in state?s onsite releases to land, air and water

DOVER – The annual Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) data report from Delaware's industrial facilities as compiled by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's Emergency Prevention and Response Section continues to show the state's progress in reducing toxic releases into the environment. TRI data from 2016 (the most recent year for which statistics are available) shows a decrease in onsite releases to land, air and water – all as compared to 2015 TRI figures. Total onsite releases were down 27 percent in Delaware for 2016 – with releases to land down 24 percent, releases to air down 23 percent and releases to water down 27 percent.

2018 Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program Now Open

The Delaware Urban and Community Forestry Program is offering up to $5,000 in grants for community-based tree projects throughout the First State.  The program is open to all Delaware municipalities, homeowner associations, and certified nonprofits. Applications are limited to one project in one category (tree planting or tree management), and all funds must be utilized on publicly owned land or community open space. Grant recipients must also provide a 50-50 cost-share match, which can be met through a combination of volunteer labor, donated materials and services, or cash from non-federal sources. This year's application deadline is March 2, 2018. Winners will be notified by April 2.

Child and adult food program offers meal reimbursements

Sponsors in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) can receive reimbursement for meals served in compliance with program regulations at qualifying child care centers, adult day care centers, emergency shelters, family day care homes and afterschool programs. Sponsors may be reimbursed for up to two meals and one snack per participant each day. Participant eligibility is tied to income eligibility guidelines that are adjusted annually by the USDA.
