DPH Announces Second Flu Death of Season; Stresses Use of Antivirals to Treat Flu Illness

DNREC, DDA prepare to respond to Delaware Supreme Court?s Dec. 7 decision allowing firearms in state parks and forests

DOVER – The Delaware Supreme Court, by decision dated Dec. 7, 2017 in the matter of Bridgeville Rifle & Pistol Club, LTD, overturned a Superior Court ruling and ended a ban on visitors' possessing firearms in Delaware's state parks and state forests. Pursuant to the ruling, visitors may now possess firearms unless they are prohibited by law due to a past conviction for a violent crime, active Protection from Abuse Order, or mental health commitment. Following the Court's decision to invalidate the existing regulations limiting firearms in state parks and forests, and some Division of Fish & Wildlife properties, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA) anticipate issuing interim firearm regulations. The interim regulations would respect the State Constitutional provisions on firearms cited by the Court, by implementing the State's interest in ensuring the safety of the public in a less restrictive manner.

Raccoon in Rehoboth Positive for Rabies; Public Health Warns Residents of King?s Creek Area

Delaware's Division of Public Health (DPH) is warning residents of the King's Creek community and surrounding areas in Rehoboth Beach of a positive case of rabies in a raccoon who bit a human last week. The raccoon was captured and brought to the DPH Lab, where test results confirming it had rabies came back on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017. The victim, who was putting up holiday decorations in his yard, was bitten by the raccoon who was hidden in some bushes. The individual has begun treatment for the bite.

MAGNOLIA – A DNREC Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police investigation culminated Dec. 4 with the arrest of a Magnolia man for multiple deer hunting violations and charges related to possession of firearms, deadly weapons, and ammunition by a person prohibited. Isaac L. Wiley, 47, of Magnolia, was charged with three counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited; two counts of possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited; one count of possession of ammunition by a person prohibited, and two counts of transporting an illegally killed deer.

Public Health Closes Illegal Tattoo Operation in Selbyville

On Tuesday Nov. 28, 2017, the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) ordered closure of an unpermitted body art establishment operating out of a barbershop in Selbyville. In addition to operating without a permit and being entirely unregulated, DPH staff were unable to confirm that proper sanitary precautions were used. DPH Health Systems Protection staff closed not only the body art establishment, in which tattooing and body piercing activities were taking place without a permit, but also the B & B Barber Shop, located at 5 West Church St., Unit 203, for grossly unsanitary conditions.
