October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Nearly one in four women, and one in nine men, will experience domestic violence, in their lifetime, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Delaware, that translates to 136,000 women and approximately 108,000 men who have been impacted. As October draws to a close, the Division of Public Health (DPH) is highlighting Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the long-term health impacts of this important social issue.

DNREC's Division of Energy & Climate has awarded a total of $245,000 in grant funding to the cities of Wilmington and Newark, and the towns of Frederica, Milton, and Fenwick Island through the Sustainable Communities Planning Grant Program. 31 Severely Neglected Animals Rescued in Seaford
On Sunday, October 8, 2017, the Division of Public Delaware Office of Animal Welfare received a tip about a property in the Seaford area with neglected animals. Delaware Animal Services (DAS), the state's animal control and cruelty enforcement unit, found approximately 43 dead dogs and took into custody another 32 animals, including 31 dogs and a cat.

The Delaware Forest Service's urban and community forestry program will hold its 7th Annual Delaware Arborist and Tree Care Seminar—a one and a half-day seminar on October 30 and 31, 2017 at the Delaware State Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. Speakers include tree care experts, policymakers, and academic researchers who will incorporate classroom lectures, outdoor demonstrations, and vendor exhibits to cover tree pest and disease issues, tree care management, and best practices in worker safety and pesticide use. online registrationAttendees can earn continuing education credits from the International Society of Arboriculture, Maryland Licensed Tree Expert, and Delaware pesticide certification. DNREC announces initiation of process to develop regulations for Coastal Zone Conversion Permits
Today the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) announced the initiation of the process to amend Delaware Coastal Zone Act regulations to incorporate the provisions of the Coastal Zone Conversion Permit Act (HB190). Governor John Carney signed HB190 into law on Aug. 2. The Act authorizes DNREC to issue permits for construction and operation of new heavy industry uses at 14 existing heavy industry use sites within the state's Coastal Zone.
