At DNREC?s request, EPA proposes Newark South Ground Water Plume Site to National Priorities List to resolve concerns about city?s ground water

DOVER – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it will propose the Newark South Ground Water Plume Site for listing on the National Priorities List (NPL). The listing in the Federal Register will allow EPA to use Superfund authority and resources to work with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) to help resolve ground water concerns in the Newark area and determine the sources of contamination there.

Governor Carney honors Delaware Forest Service wildfire crew at State Fair

Governor John C. Carney, Jr. and Secretary of Agriculture Michael T. Scuse celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Delaware Forest Service and honored the wildfire crew that just returned from two weeks battling blazes in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. The crew, which left the First State on July 8 and returned on July 23, first tackled the 700-acre Wilson Fire near Meeker, Colorado – started by lightning on July 7. The firefighters then moved on to the Grizzly Fire before finishing up on the Dragon Fire – located just south of Rangely, Colorado. Delaware's team included 17 state and federal firefighters from Delaware and three from West Virginia. "The Forest Service has done unbelievable work over 90 years," Governor Carney told the audience. "As we celebrate 98 years of the Delaware State Fair, we've got a lot of other milestones that are happening, including the recognition of Delaware's state forestry service for 90 years of operation and their tremendous work."

DNREC establishes 21-day timeframe for extended closure of Delaware Bay for recreational shellfish harvest

DOVER – As reported this week to the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's Surface Water Discharges Section, Kent County's wastewater treatment plant is back within acceptable water quality levels for the effluent discharged into the Murderkill River – leading DNREC to establish a timeframe for a federally-advised 21-day closure of recreational shellfish harvest in the Delaware Bay north of the Mispillion Inlet. The 21-day closure in effect for potential public health risks extends from July 24 to Aug. 14.

DNREC closes recreational shellfish harvest in north Delaware Bay due to undertreated wastewater from Kent County treatment plant

DOVER – Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Shawn M. Garvin today directed the Kent County wastewater treatment plant to take immediate action to correct an ongoing discharge of undertreated effluent that prompted the Secretary to issue an emergency order for the closure of recreational shellfishing in the Delaware Bay north of the entrance to the Mispillion Inlet. The emergency closure impacts only the harvest of bivalve molluscan shellfish – clams, oysters and mussels – and does not affect the legal harvest of other shellfish species such as crabs and conchs.

Delaware Cancer Mortality Drops Again; Public Health Releases Latest Cancer Report

Cancer screening and early detection have contributed to a continuing decline in Delaware's all-site cancer mortality rate over the past decade, say Delaware Public Health officials. From 1999-2003 to 2009-2013, Delaware's cancer death rate decreased 15 percent, an improvement that was slightly higher than the decline seen nationally (14 percent), according to the latest cancer data announced by the Division of Public Health (DPH).
