DOVER – Through a new public awareness campaign beginning today, DNREC's Division of Fish & Wildlife Mosquito Control Section urges residential and business property owners throughout the state to empty all standing water sources, large and small, to reduce mosquito-breeding habitat on their properties. Delaware middle school students enjoy hands-on renewable energy experience with DNREC-sponsored Junior Solar Sprint

HARRINGTON – Gauger-Cobbs Middle School of Newark and W.T. Chipman Middle School of Harrington claimed the checkered flag today as 24 teams of middle school students from 14 schools across the state vied for honors in the Junior Solar Sprint, a competition in which students build and race solar-powered model cars. DNREC's Division of Energy & Climate teamed up with the Delaware Technology Student Association to organize this year's event at the Delaware State Fairgrounds.

DPH and DNREC Share Updated Federal Fish Consumption Guidelines for Pregnant Women and Children

Many of us have heard that eating fish is a key part of a healthy diet. But how much should we eat and are there risks to pregnant women and children? In January, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued updated advice regarding fish consumption that applies to fish and shellfish caught commercially and sold in U.S. retail outlets. This advice is geared toward helping women who are pregnant or may become pregnant – as well as breastfeeding mothers and parents of young children – make informed choices when it comes to fish that is healthy and safe to eat.

Delaware students to compete in state Envirothon Thursday, April 27 in Newark

DOVER – Students from around the state will meet April 27 at the University of Delaware's Webb Farm in Newark to compete in the 22nd annual Delaware Envirothon – sponsored by the Delaware Association of Conservation Districts (DACD). Second Wilmington Raccoon Positive for Rabies; Public Health Warns Residents in Sharpley Area

Delaware's Division of Public Health (DPH) is warning residents in the Sharpley area (near Mt. Lebanon and Sharpley Roads) who may have come into contact with a raccoon found to be rabid on Thursday, April 20, 2017. The raccoon was picked up after getting into a fight with a domestic cat in the area and died during the altercation with the cat and pet owner. The cat is currently under quarantine following exposure.

2018/19 Delaware Waterfowl and 2018 Trout Stamp winners announced

The results are in, and two artists have won top honors in the state's Waterfowl and Trout Stamp art contests. A painting of a pintail duck and a Golden Retriever by Daniel Allard of Marengo, Ohio, will grace the 2018/19 Delaware Waterfowl Stamp, and a painting of a brook trout by Eric Jablonowski of Suwanee, Ga., will adorn the 2018 Delaware Trout Stamp.

Wilmington Raccoon Positive for Rabies; Public Health Warns Residents of Chalfonte Area

Delaware's Division of Public Health (DPH) is warning residents of the Chalfonte community and surrounding areas in Wilmington who may have come into contact with a raccoon that the DPH Lab found to be rabid on Thursday, April 13, 2017. The raccoon was picked up after getting into a fight with pet dogs in the area and was euthanized. Anyone who thinks they might have been bitten, scratched or come in contact with a raccoon should immediately contact their health care provider or call the DPH Rabies Program at 302-744-4995.

In recognition of Dog Bite Prevention Week from April 9 to 15, 2017 the Division of Public Health Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) aims to reduce dog bite occurrences with useful tips for anyone who comes in contact with dogs. Dog bites are often preventable with responsible dog ownership and correct behavior around dogs. In 2016, 1,564 dog bites to humans were reported to the Delaware Division of Public Health. Owners may be liable if their dog bites a person or another animal, but having control of one's dog can greatly decrease bite risks.

DPH Announces Three More Flu-Related Deaths; 45-Year-Old Male Had No Known Underlying Health Conditions

The Division of Public Health (DPH) is announcing three more flu-related fatalities for the 2016-2017 flu season. The three recent deaths push flu-related fatalities in Delaware to 14 - more than doubling the 2015-2016 death total of six. Of the 14 Delawareans who have died from the flu this season, 13 had other serious underlying health conditions. However, the most recent flu-related death involved a 45-year-old Kent County man who had no known significant underlying medical conditions beyond being ill with the flu. DPH was not able to verify his vaccination status.

Wildlife art enthusiasts, stamp and print collectors, waterfowl hunters, anglers, birdwatchers and wetland conservationists will gather at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8 for the judging of Delaware's annual Waterfowl Stamp and Trout Stamp contests, which will be held at the Delaware Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Event at Owens Station Shooting Sports & Hunter Education Center, 12613 Hunters Cove Road, Greenwood, DE 19950.
