New online tool to assess community tree canopy in Delaware

The Delaware Forest Service (DFS) has unveiled a new online tool that uses geographic information systems (GIS) software to help cities, towns, and neighborhoods to measure and increase their community tree canopy percentage. The link is: de.gov/treecanopy Developed by the Delaware Department of Agriculture's GIS specialist Jimmy Kroon, the tool covers the entire First State: municipalities as well as homeowner associations and neighborhoods can assess their current level of tree cover as a starting point to explore opportunities to plant new trees and maintain their existing ones.

Delaware Flu Fatalities Increase To 11 ? Highest Number Of Illnesses In Over Ten Years

Although flu season is beginning to wind down, the number of flu-related deaths in Delaware for the 2016-2017 flu season continues to rise. The Division of Public Health (DPH) is announcing three more flu-related fatalities bringing this season's total to 11. The second week of March, an 83-year-old New Castle County woman, infected with Influenza B, and a 77-year-old Kent County woman, infected with Influenza A, died. The third week of March, a 76-year-old Sussex County woman, also infected with Influenza A, died. All had underlying health conditions in addition to being ill with the flu.

DPH Seeking Public Input On How to Reach Residents During Emergencies

The Division of Public Health (DPH) is seeking the public's input to develop the most clear and effective ways to reach Delawareans in the event of emergency situations such as hurricanes, flooding, serious illness outbreaks, industrial accidents, and power outages. Over the next several weeks, DPH will survey Delaware residents via email and in-person small group discussions to better understand how to best reach residents with the most accurate and up-to-date information during an emergency event. The information will be used to develop a meaningful Emergency Public Information and Warning Plan for the State of Delaware.

DNREC seeks public input on improving state?s air quality using settlement funds from Volkswagen lawsuits

DOVER – DNREC has learned from federal officials that Delaware can anticipate approximately $9 million from an Environmental Mitigation Trust established through partial settlement of lawsuits against the automakers Volkswagen and Audi for installing emissions "defeat devices" on vehicles in violation of the federal Clean Air Act. Flu Claims Three More Lives In Delaware, Bringing 2016-2017 Total To Eight

The total number of lab-confirmed influenza cases continues to increase in Delaware and the virus has now claimed three more lives, bringing the statewide total to eight deaths in the 2016-2017 flu season, the Division of Public Health (DPH) reports. The number of lab-confirmed cases is now 2,712 compared to 416 at this time last year.

Eighteen Delaware sites awarded grants for urban agriculture and community gardens

Eighteen Delaware urban agriculture and community garden projects are receiving support through a second round of funding designed to strengthen communities and improve nutrition. The partnerships that have developed at the local and state around urban agriculture and community gardening have really helped to transform Delaware communities. The grants awarded this year totaled $27,671.74, with $17,671.74 from Delaware Department of Agriculture. New Castle Conservation District pledged the additional $10,000 match for New Castle County sites.

DNREC fines Delaware City Refining Company/PBF Energy for violation of Secretary?s Order and illegal shipment of petroleum

DOVER – DNREC Secretary David Small today issued a $150,000 fine in a Notice of Penalty Assessment and Secretary's Order to the Delaware City Refining Company and PBF Energy for violating an earlier DNREC Order that allowed the refinery to ship crude oil from Delaware City to only its Paulsboro, N.J. facility as a condition of DNREC's granting an air permit to PBF Energy and DCRC in 2013.

Upstate trout season to open April 1 in six New Castle County streams

Delaware's spring upstate trout season will open at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, April 1, DNREC's Division of Fish & Wildlife announced today. Portions of six designated trout streams in northern New Castle County – White Clay Creek, Christina Creek, Pike Creek, Beaver Run, Wilson Run and Mill Creek – will be stocked with thousands of rainbow and brown trout, including some trophy-sized fish.

Division of Public Health Using Technology to Help Physicians Fight Heart Disease And Lower Blood Pressure Among Delawareans

One in three Americans has high blood pressure, and 48 percent of those who have it do not have it under control. In fact, more than one-third of people with hypertension are unaware they even have the condition. In 2015, over 255,000 Delawareans age 18 or older, suffered from high blood pressure, one of the primary factors that lead people to develop heart disease. These are dangerous situations since persons with high blood pressure are four times more likely to die from stroke, and three times more likely to die from heart disease. To battle this health crisis, the Division of Public Health and Quality Insights launched a project in 2016 to improve hypertension management for patients in 85 Delaware physician practices.

DPH Dental Program Launches School-Based Smile Check Program

The Division of Public Health (DPH) is pleased to announce the launch of its newest school-based oral health outreach program, the Delaware Smile Check (DSC). Debut screenings took place in Sussex County at Seaford Central Elementary School on January 17, and the program has already been conducted at seven schools throughout the state To date,1,018 children have received screenings from a DPH hygienist who informs parents/guardians of each child's oral health status through a report card that is sent home. In addition to the screenings, 1,018 students received preventive applications of fluoride varnish to strengthen teeth against decay and reverse early cavities. The Delaware Smile Check is a grant-funded program that seeks to connect under-served children with dental homes and help coordinate treatment for children who have emergency dental needs. As a result of this program, 206 students have received referrals to treat suspected cavities, and 217 students who were identified as needing emergency care received help finding a dentist to treat them immediately.
